A Botanical Transect is a collection of three botanical artworks created from real plants collected, pressed, and arranged by Roots founder and biologist Ashley Ferguson.
Each composition represents a different ecological community within the Cane Bayou landscape. Together, they tell the story of a changing environment, from open water to marsh to upland forest.
Created at the intersection of field biology and botanical art, this collection invites you to look a little closer at the landscapes that make Louisiana extraordinary.
Choose Your Habitat
I. Aquatic: Cane Bayou & Bayou Mouth
An intricate assemblage of aquatic vegetation collected from Cane Bayou and its mouth at Lake Pontchartrain. This piece explores the submerged, floating, and emergent plants that create habitat beneath and along the water's surface.
II. Marsh: Estuarine Emergent Wetland
A collection of grasses, flowering plants, and other vegetation representing the marshlands surrounding Cane Bayou. This composition captures the diversity and delicate structure of a wetland community shaped by fluctuating water levels and estuarine influences.
III. Upland: Group Camp 3 Woodlands
A botanical study of the wooded habitats near Fontainebleau's Group Camp 3. Leaves, vines, ferns, and understory vegetation come together to illustrate the layered structure of Louisiana's upland plant communities.
The Complete Transect
Bring home all three botanical studies as a coordinated collection. Displayed together, Aquatic, Marsh, and Upland illustrate the ecological connections between three distinct habitats within one Louisiana landscape.
